Examination of universal design criteria on the case of a park in the city of Aydın

Objective: This study was carried out with the aim of examining Nevzat Biçer Park, located in Aydın province, according to the universal design principles, by taking the opinions of disabled individuals and experts, and making design proposals in this direction. Material and Methods: Nevzat Biçer Park, located in the Cumhuriyet neighborhood of the Efeler district of Aydın city, constitutes the main material of the study. The originally created "observation form" and "expert and disabled opinion forms" are auxiliary materials of the study. The method of the study consists of data collection, analysis and conclusion stages. Following the literature review and field observations, the analysis of the research area according to the universal design principles through observation forms and making design proposals by discussing the obtained information constituted the method of the study. Results: Nevzat Biçer Park received a score below the average in terms of disabled people. In four sub-regions, the first sub-region (children's playground and the sitting area of the enterprise) and the second sub-region (mini amphitheater and sports area) received the highest points, respectively. The fourth sub-region (sports ground, ornamental pool and its surroundings) received the lowest score. Among the sub-regions, the highest average is 2.27 and the lowest average is 1.3. Among the universal design principles, the principle of "Low physical strength" received the highest score, while the principle of "Perceptible/understandable information (practicality)" received the lowest score. The blind individual gave a lower score on average than the physically disabled person. Conclusion: As a result of the analysis of universal design principles, observation forms, expert and disabled opinion forms, the area was found unsuccessful. In the sub-regions, there should be information boards, urban furniture and warnings against dangers that are suitable for everyone's use. Necessary maintenance should be done on the floor coverings. The park should also have tactile, stimulating surfaces to ensure nighttime use safety and access for all. Key Words: Universal design principles, Disabled, Aydın city, Accessibility
