Women in Fi Zılâli'l Qur'ân interpretation

The interpretive abilities of individuals can sometimes vary based on social needs and may change over time or location. Since commentators are also influenced by the social, political, spiritual, and cultural conditions of the societies they live in, these influences inevitably reflect on Quranic interpretations, leading to differences in the assessments made. The noticeable divergence between traditional commentaries and those written in recent times generally stems from the conditions of the respective periods. Undoubtedly, the "woman phenomenon" has intrigued minds throughout history and has consistently been a topic addressed by commentators. Although the context may change over time, this subject has always been of interest and has not lost its relevance. In this study, verses related to women, among the current controversial issues, have been examined and evaluated within the framework of the tafsir known as "In the Shade of the Qur'an" (Fî Zılâli'l Kur'ân), which is considered a contemporary commentary and has influenced many modern tafsirs that came after it. In this work, the identity of women, their position in the family and societal life have been attempted to be determined. The comments and evaluations on the topics were presented in a cohesive manner by examining the author's views in "In the Shade of the Qur'an" alongside his opinions in his other works. In the introduction section; Qutb's life, his scientific and intellectual aspects, his effects on the Islamic world, his works, and the writing process and characteristics of the Fî Zılâli'l Qur'an commentary are expressed. The characteristics of the period in which Sayyid Qutb lived, his education, and the impact he had with his views during and after his lifetime were briefly mentioned. In addition, the works written by Qutb were cited and information regarding their interpretation was presented. The methods he preferred while writing his work were discussed. In the second part; Although there are narrations about the creation of women, the source of information about the creation of women from the ribs of men is mentioned. In the third part; The qualifications of women in family life are conveyed within the framework of the concept of "kavvâm". The nuşûz of women and the sanctions foreseen for this are explained. The verse about polygamy has been examined in the context of different narrations. In the fourth part; The position of women in social life was determined and the injustices they suffered in different areas were revealed. Some of the social-political rights of women have been evaluated in the context of narrations. It has been seen that Qutb declared provisions in favor of women on most of these issues.
