Abstract (EN)
Neology is relevant to three fields of linguistics: lexicology in terms of meaning, morphology in terms of structure and sociolinguistics in terms of the recruitment and utterance of a word by the society. Neologism could be described as the production of a new signifier for an emerging semantic indicator. Indeed, continuously developing technology and science result in the emergence of novel concepts. Mobile technologies, where the scientific and technologic developments occur in the most rapid and intense way, are the field in which this linguistic and sociolinguistic phenomenon could be observed. This study, therefore, by taking smart phone manuals as the database, morphologically compares neologisms in French and Turkish. In the study, how the lexical semantics have changed in French and Turkish by taking the languages' internal structures are examined in addition to investigation of the sociolinguistics factors' affect on the thrive of a language. The study first explores neography (lexicalising of a new word) and neology (how new words are coined). Then, after setting the theoretical framework of the topic, it evaluates the causality of neologism as well as the scientific approaches and theories on the determination of neologisms. The study is a quantitative one and the data acquired via the database is evaluated with a statistical proof method. Therefore, manuals of four different phone brands (Samsung, Sony, Vestel, Wiko) are used as the database where the structural and numeric status of neologisms in the two languages (French and Turkish), reasons of origins and lexicalising are compared. Obtained data suggests that there are more Turkish neologisms than the French ones. On the other hand, there are less borrowed words from English to French, compared to the words from English to Turkish. Partial borrowings are analysed to be more than full borrowings in both languages. Compound neologies are more frequent than the other derivational techniques. There are statistically more binominal noun neologies than any other derivational techniques. Authentic derivations (that is unique to a language, not present or used in other languages) are most identified in French manuals. In the investigated neologisms, structural similarities between English and Turkish are found to be more than the ones between French and Turkish. Lexicologically, one-word neologism is found to be the most in French, two-word neologism is found to be the most in Turkish and three-word neologism is found to be the most in English. There may be numerous reasons for the neologisms in both languages such as structural context and the entrance processes to the dictionary, yet, in general, it is possible to say that these differences occur due to the internal structure of the language and external, namely social, reasons.
