From the past to the present Malatya local media

This study, titled "Malatya Local Media from Past to Present," presents an examination of Malatya's local press. Local media outlets, which reflect Malatya's socio-cultural fabric, are important for understanding the city's social dynamics. The study examines the history, content structures, and societal impacts of local newspapers in Malatya, aiming to understand the role of media in this region. In addition, the transformation of local media in the digitalization process and the effects of this transformation on the flow of information in Malatya are also examined. This thesis aims to examine in detail the evolution, current state, and future of the local press in Malatya, one of Turkey's cities enriched by its historical and cultural fabric. Malatya, a city located in the heart of Anatolia with a long-standing history, harbors a rich media history within itself. This study will comprehensively examine the journey of Malatya's local press from the past to the present, the challenges and successes it has faced during this process, the changes brought about by the digital age, and the effects of these changes on the local press. The main objective of the study is to understand and analyze how the local press in Malatya has evolved in social, economic, and political contexts and how this evolution has reflected on the city's socio-cultural structure. Additionally, by addressing the effects of the local press on society, media literacy, and the public's perspective on the media, the study aims to provide an in-depth perspective on the social role of Malatya's local media. The study is designed to use both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including interviews, surveys, and fieldwork with local journalists, media experts, and the people of Malatya. This multifaceted approach is critical to better understanding the current state of the local press in Malatya and making predictions about the future. Finally, this study will examine in detail the effects of digitization, globalization, and technological developments on the local press in Malatya, and how these effects are reflected in local journalism practices and media consumption habits. This study is expected to be a valuable resource for both academic circles and professionals working in the media and communications sector, and to bring important discussions about the future of the local press. This study is divided into four sections. The first section provides a general overview of the media, focusing on the definitions and importance of national and local media. It then transitions to the history of the press during the Ottoman period, providing a detailed look at important elements such as journalism, printing, photography, and magazine publishing during this period. Understanding the evolution of the media during the Ottoman period provides a fundamental framework for assessing how this evolution has influenced today's media environment. This study not only offers a broad overview of media history but also helps us understand how the press culture of the Ottoman period laid the foundations for today's media. The second chapter focuses on important milestones in the Republican era, shedding light on critical periods such as the establishment of the Anatolian Agency, the 1935-1950 elections, and the 1960 coup. Understanding the role of the press in these important events will enable us to evaluate Turkey's media history in greater detail and understand today's media environment. In the third section, the local press in Malatya, which forms the basis of the research, is examined in detail, and the theoretical framework of the study is established. In the fourth chapter, the history of the Malatya local media from past to present is examined, important figures and events in the Malatya local media are highlighted, semi-structured interviews are conducted with important figures related to the press in Malatya, and 102 years of press history are examined.
