Abstract (EN)

Both of oral and written literature is a mirror on which the thought, belief, taste and understanding of people generated them through history is reflected together with the social context through the flow of time.From which manner the tradition of Meddahship and Meddah tales have been elaborated and analyzed within the perspectives of narration and performance till today? Upon which fundamental dynamics the tales? form of performance and content are based? What is the current status and conditions of the tradition of Meddahship? These are the core questions tried to be answered in this study.The tradition of Meddahship and Meddah tales constitutes a significant place in the map of the meanings and values that surrounds the social and cultural spheres; and from this perspective they can be considered as ?social history?.Besides Introduction and Conclusion, this study titled as ?Meddahship Today? is composed of three main chapters. The Introduction chapter basically provides the aim, scope and method of the thesis. Also, under the title of Culture, Globalization, Tradition and Values System, it is tried to form a conceptual framework through discussing the concepts such as culture, oral and written culture, popular culture, cultural transformations, modernism, globalization and tradition (custom).In the first chapter titled as ?Meddah, Meddah Tales and Folk Narratives? ,from the point of ?meddah? concept it is aimed to provide definition of ?meddahship? and discuss the meddah tales, their structure and form characteristics and humor subjects.In the second chapter titled as ? Traditional Turkish Theater, Meddahship Tradition and Performing Settings? is composed of two main parts such ?Meddahship in Traditional Turkish Theater? and ?Performaing Setting and Meddahship Tradition?, meddahship tradition is tried to evaluated from the points of theater, performing arts and cultural settings. By this way, the relationship between meddahship tradition and the concepts such as narrative, text, performer, audience, narrater, performing setting, coffeehouses, written-oral and electronic cultural settings, are tried to be provided.In the third chapter titled as ?Traditional Turkish Theater, Meddahship and Performing Settings? and believed to constitute the basis of the thesis, the concepts such as fest, festival and festivities having importance from the point of the presentation and promotion of traditional cultural elements, are presented. Furthermore, perceptions and thoughts of the contemporary representatives of meddahship tradition on the tradition and also on the past, present and the future of Traditional Turkish Theater are discussed together.In the conclusion, it is provided a general evaluation on studies done in the context of the thesis.Key Worlds1.
