Anniversaries of the İnönü Wars in terms of 'polishing of the image' of the İsmet İnönü in the Turkish press, "Hakimiyet-i Milliye" and the "Ulus" 1938-1950

The Ottoman Empire, defeated by the First World War, signed the Armistice of Mudros and the Empire entered in the new process. In this process, the period of National Struggle that started with the occupation of Izmir by the Greek resulted in the independence of the Turks. The foundations of a definite victory laid with the Battles of Inonu by stopping the marches of the Greeks. In this period, Hakimiyet-i Milliye, which was issued by Mustafa Kemal Pasha, was actively used to gather the public support round and to form public opinion. This newspaper was renamed to Ulus later and continued its publication. This study is based on these two newspapers. Even though, either the way of victory celebration of the Battles of Inonu or the way they appear in the press differ by periodically, they have appeared in the press every period. The anniversaries of the Battles of Inonu, celebrated in the 1920s, have been an integrating element between the public and the state. Anniversary news published in these years plays the role of symbols of Turkish independence. In the years that followed, articles on victories were published, usually marking an anniversary. In line with İsmet İnönü's National Chief, the volume of the celebration news was expanded and made more enthusiastically in the 1940s. Compared to the period between 1939 and 1945, there was a decrease in the rate of publishing of İnönü Victories in newspapers during the transition back to the multi-party system in 1945. Hakimiyet-i Milliye and its successor, Ulus newspaper, between the years of 1921 and 1950 covered by the study, were examined and the way anniversaries were reflected in the press and their periodic changes, were evaluated.
