Abstract (EN)

In this clinical retrospective study, the demographic data of 500 wild birds of 54 different species that are injured, sick and in need of care in the Hatay region between the years 2020-2021 were evaluated. Demographic Data: Species information of wild birds, arrival periods according to seasons, reasons for acceptance and distribution of diagnosed diseases were determined. In addition, the distribution of the number of birds treated and rehabilitated, released to nature, sent to the zoo and died were evaluated on a yearly and bi-annual basis according to species groups. After the necessary clinical and radiological examinations of the injured wild birds, their treatment was started to improve their general condition. Disease diagnoses were made according to anamnesis, clinical findings, radiographic findings and hemogram results, and the distribution of fracture cases in birds was evaluated. Species Distribution: Of all incoming wild birds, 330 (66%) were raptors, 125 (25%) migratory birds, and 45 (9%) other wild local bird species. When the seasonal arrivals of wild birds are evaluated; In 2020, 78 (35.5%) of them came in summer, 54 (24.5%) in spring, 45 (20.5%) in autumn and 43 (19.5%) in winter. . In 2021, it was determined that 92 (32.8%) came in spring, 77 (27.5%) in autumn, 59 (21.1%) in summer When the reasons for the arrival of all cases were evaluated; According to the frequency of cases, gunshot wounds (41.4%), migration fatigue/weakness (38.2%), orphans (7.8%), unknown causes (4.6%), electric shock (3%), other animal attacks (2.6%), cutting of wings and tail perches (1.8%) and traffic accidents (0.6%). According to the diagnosed diseases, when the number of cases and the percentages are evaluated in a two-year period; 184 (36.8%) fractures, 152 (30.4%) migration fatigue, 44 (8.8%) other conditions (orphan/orphanage etc. other unknown), 38 (7.6%) infections, 21 (% 4.2 parasitic infestation, 15 (3.0%) soft tissue damage, 15 (3.0) electrocution, 9 (1.8%) myiasis, 3 (0.6%) spinal damage, 3 (0%) .6% were head trauma, 3 (0.6%) wingtip edema, 2 (0.4%) keratitis, 1 (0.2%) aspiration pneumonia and 1 (0.2%) arthritis. When the distribution of the fractures according to the bones is stated, the number of cases and the % rates are evaluated in a two-year period, the maximum radius and ulna 57.06% (radius 7.06%, ulna 22.28%, radius-ulna 27.71%) fractures, humerus (21.74%), metacarpal (8.69%), tibia (5.43%), femur (2.71%), tarsometatarsus (1.08%), phalanx (1.08%), lower beak (% 0.54) and upper beak (0.54%). When the treatment methods were evaluated, it was determined that 283 (57%) medical treatments, 203 (40%) orthopedics and 14 (3%) soft tissue surgeries were performed. When the surgical and orthopedic treatments applied in a total of 217 cases are evaluated according to the treatment methods, the number of cases and the percentages are; 69 amputations (31.8%), 51 bandages (23.5%), 72 cage rest (33.18%), 6 intramedullary (IM) pins (2.8%), 3 IM pins and cerclage (1,4%), 2 external fixations (0.9%) and 14 wound revisions (6.45%). While 128 (58.18%) of 220 cases were released back to nature in 2020, 6 (2.72%) were sent to the zoo and 86 (39.09%) died. In 2021, 144 (51.42%) of 280 cases were sent back to nature, 5 (1.78%) were sent to the zoo, while 131 (46.78%) died. As a result; During a total of two years, 272 (54.4%) of 500 cases were released into the wild, 11 (2.2%) cases were sent to the zoo, and death occurred in 217 (43.4%) cases.
