Abstract (EN)

Ill ABSTRACT RISK MANAGEMENT FOR THE AVIATION SAFETY AND EXAMPLE OF APPLICATIONS TO THE AVIATION ORGANIZATIONS Ayşe KÜÇÜK YILMAZ Civil Aviation Management Program Anadolu University Social Sciences Institute, August 2003 AdvisonAss. Prof. Dr. Ergün KAYA Risk Management in aviation is defined as the systematic management of the risks associated with flight operations, related ground operations and aircraft engineering or maintenance activities to achieve high levels of safety performance. Airline activities are implemented by different sub-systems. These activities are connected to each other mutually. Airlines using high technology run in an environment where the speed of change in technology and market is extremely high, dynamic and intricated and the competition is very intense. Because of these environmental characteristics, airlines should have a flexible system which allows quick-decision making and adaptation with changing environmental conditions. Risk Management is a process consisting of well-defined steps which, support better decision making by contributing to a greater insight into risks and their impacts. It is as much about identifying opportunities as it is about avoiding losses. By adopting effective Risk Management techniques operators can help to improve safety, quality and business performance in company. Basically any organisation, large, medium or small, private or public, can benefit from the implementation of Risk Management strategies. To implement risk management strategy, international and national aviation authority and organisations have developed risk management guidance and standards. This outlines the generic procedures and processes which need to be implemented for effective Risk Management. Organisations improved their own risk management systems by using these sources according their aims and requirements. In this study, applications of risk management studied in the MNG and Freebird Airlines. Accordance with these applications, this study includes applicable suggestions for the aviation organizations.
