Evaluation of leadership and organizational affiliation of nurses

Abstract (EN)

The aim of the study was to assess the nurses? leadership behaviours and organizational commitment and to determine the factors associated with leadership behaviours and organizational commitment. The study adopted a descriptive design. This study was conducted at a private hospital in Istanbul. Study sample comprised of a total of 134 nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using Nurse Information Questionnaire, Denison Organizational Culture Questionnaire, Leadership Behaviors Scale and Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (SAS). The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 16). The mean age of the nurses was 29.78 ± 7.28 (range 18-54). More than thirty (35.1%) percent of nurses were nursing high school graduates and 35.1% of sample completed from undergraduate program. Nurses? mean score of Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale was 211.27 ± 24.12 (Range: 111-273). Nurses? mean scores of Denison Organizational Culture Questionnaire for Involvement subscale was the highest score (3.25 ± 0.57) and Mission subscale was the lowest score (3.13 ± 0.48). Mean score of Leadership Behaviors Scale?s Change-based leadership subscale was the highest (2.30 ± 0.94), mean score of Task-based leadership subscale was the lowest (2.18 ± 0.93). Study found a weak but positive relationship between means of Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale and Denison Organizational Culture Questionnaire subscales (rs = 0.19 - 0.22, p < 0.05), and between Sociotropy Scale and Leadership Behaviors Scale scores (rs= 0.18-0.21, p < 0.05). There was not a statistically significant relationship between mean scores of Autonomy Scale and Leadership Behaviors Scale (p > 0.05). There was not a statistically significant relationship between mean scores of Denison Organizational Culture Questionnaire and Leadership Behaviors Scale (p > 0.05). In order to improve the nurses? leadership skills and organizational commitment, it is crucial to develop strategies, educational programmes, focus group discussions, rewarding methods to motivate development of leadership.
