Assessment of the relationship between self-learning, information literacy and academic achievement of nursing students

Self-learning helps students to actively take part in the educational process. Self-learning ability means that students assume the responsibility of their own learning process. This abilities should decide sources, learning and assessment methods in line with the learning objectives of students. Information literacy is the perception, search, discovery, acquisition, assessment and effective use of the information required. This study has been conducted with the purpose of assessing the self-learning and information literacy levels of nursing students and the factors influencing these as well as the relation of both elements with academic achievement of students. Survey method has been used to collect data in the study. During the study, 419 nursing students were interviewed. Form of Student Information, Form of Determination of Information Access Methods of Students, Self Learning Scale and Information Literacy Skills Scale of Students which have been prepared according to demographic features of the students have been used in the collection of data. While the highest score (4,09 ± 0,991) obtained from the Self-Learning Skills scale comes from the article, "I want to improve myself and definitely go to the highest level", the lowest score (3,66 ± 0,961) comes from the article, "I am good at controlling and adjusting my learning time." While the highest score obtainedfrom the Information Literacy scale (4,24 ± 0,829) comes from the article, "using web search engines (Google, Altavista, Arabul, etc.)," the lowest score (3,31 ± 1,100) comes from the article, "In case I have to determine the subject of study/research." As a result of data analysis obtained from the study, it has been determined that there is a positively-oriented and significant relationship between self-learning and information literacy and both concept postively impacts the academic achevement of students.
