Investigation of the effects about organ donation and transplantation of thought on family and education of nursing students

The study which has a descriptor quality is realized in a nursing school in a foundation university for the purpose of researching the effect of the family and the nursing education on the thoughts of the nursing students regarding organ donation and transplant. The target population of the study is all the students in the nursing school. The sample consists of 203 students who study in first grade and fourth grade and agree to take part in the study. The data of the study is collected through the survey prepared by the researcher. The survey consists of 32 questions in total which question some demographic qualities in the Section I. Section II consists of 18 likert-type questions which question the thoughts. The data acquired in the study is analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Packagefor Social Sciences) 17.0 program. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics such as frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and percentage. The study group consists of 1st grade by 54,7% (n= 111), 4th grade by 45,3% (n=92), female students by 92,6% (n=188) and male students by 7,4% (n= 15). It is determined that 7,4% (n=15) of the students have donated an organ. When the education status of the students on the subject, it is seen that 63,1% (n= 128) of them state that they have not been educated on the subject. When their place of education is asked, 18% (n=37) of them state that they get information from media organs. 69,5% (n=141) of the students who take part in the study think of donating or transplanting an organ, 29,6% (n=60) of them do not have such a thought. It is seen that The Thought and Attitude Evaluation Form Regarding Organ Donation and Transplant scores of the students whose families support the organ donation (25,50 ± 3,098) is higher in a degree of statistically significant compared to the students whose families are undetermined regarding organ donation (20,11 ± 4,122). According to the results of this study, it has been suggested that the students should obtain more information regarding the subject during their vocational education in school since they will work as health professionals and health educators after they graduate.
