Herman Hertzberger's view on the concept of socialization and its reflection on educational structures

The education process, which has an important place in the lives of individuals, can be supported with educational structures and help the individual to socialize and integrate into society. Educational structures, which are the first institutions in which the individual is involved, interact, establish dialogue, explore, participate in the environment, exhibit behaviors suitable for life, learn values, environmental awareness, gain skills, problem solving, gain responsibility, gain knowledge, control behaviors, sharing, skills such as obeying the rules of respect support the socialization of the individual. In the study, it is aimed to design spatial analyzes that will enable the socialization of the individual in an educational structure, based on this supportive feature of educational structures. Within the scope of the study, the kindergarten, primary, secondary and high school education structure designs of Herman Hertzberger, who is known as the architect of educational buildings and who realized the concept of socialization in the spatial organization of many educational buildings he designed, were examined. In the study, in order to explain how Herman Hertzberger supports the concept of socialization in educational structures designed by spatial analysis, the relevant literature was examined and socialization was determined in Herman Hertzberger's educational structures. These sub-concepts, which were determined as comfort, sub-concepts flexibility, freedom/creativity, natural lighting, and learning, were examined within the scope of the study through the structure group selected over the educational structures of Hertzberger. With the results obtained, it has been seen that Herman Hertzberger offers spatial solutions that are thought to support the socialization of individuals by providing communication-interaction in educational structures. It is thought that the results obtained from the study will contribute to the spatial organization solutions that support the socialization understanding of the individual in the future educational structure desing.
