Abstract (EN)
Turkish bookbinding started with the Uyghur Turks in the 13th Century and has developed throughout history by adopting different characteristic features. With the adoption of Islam by the Turks, the understanding of art gained great momentum. The value given to the book also showed itself in its preservation and decoration, and eventually, this turned into a branch of art. Along with the political stability achieved in the 15th century, the art of bookbinding, like other branches of art that developed on the foundations of the Seljuk understanding of art, showed great development and created the Ottoman classical style. In the 19th century, with the spread of the printing press, manuscripts decreased compared to the past, and accordingly, a decline was observed in the ornamental arts as well. In this period, the manuscripts were found in state libraries and museums, but also private libraries as well. One of these private libraries is Ibrahim Hakkı Konyalı Library. In this study, the binding samples in this library have been examined, and the techniques of the bindings, the materials used, the marbling used on the cover, and the endpaper of the book have been studied in detail. Manuscripts, which are rich in ornaments and found in Turkish libraries and museums, are an area that needs to be examined in terms of Turkish-Islamic arts. This study aims to draw attention to the importance of physical descriptions as well as bibliographic features in cataloging manuscripts.
