Analyses of the ornamentation of selected varaks from the Album of Murad III

Among the studies on Ottoman book arts, murakka (album) production is a subject that has not yet been sufficiently analyzed. Murakkas are collections of examples of calligraphy, illumination, illumination, katı', miniature and brush paintings and have a different structure from manuscripts. It is known that the first murakkas were made in the Timurid Palace and this tradition was developed in the Turkmen and Safavid Palaces. As Timurid, Turkmen and Safavid albums entered the Ottoman palace as booty or ambassadorial gifts, this branch of art was adopted by the Ottoman nakkashi and gained momentum especially in the 16th century. In this period, many Persian artists from Iran had a great influence. While new albums were being prepared, additions were made to existing albums and sometimes, after a century or two, they were revised and re-bound with new additions. This Ottoman album is preserved in the National Library of Vienna and bears a dedication by Mehmed Cenderizâde for Sultan Murad III on its illuminated frontispiece. Although the Murad III album reveals the characteristics of the 16th century with its magnificent appearance. It is also of special importance as it is the first album to bear a dedication for the Ottoman Sultan. In this thesis, the ornamentation of the album was examined by determining the variety of motifs, composition and pattern drawings, coloring and coloring on the selected varnas. The aim of the study and the methods followed in the research, the subject of the research, Murad III's princedom and artist identity, Murad III's personality, Murad III period art workshops and artists under the title of art, decoration understanding of the period. The subject of artists was touched upon. By giving information about the production of Murakka', the selected varaks of the album numbered Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, Codex Mixtus 313 were analyzed in terms of illumination, and the illuminations of the work were discussed with photographs and pattern drawings.
