Abstract (EN)

This study was made half experimentally to compare the microbiologic colonizations of peripheral venous catheters which was fixed by 2 different materials. The study was conducted in Harput State Hospital internal medicine clinic where the patients admitted by diabetes diagnosis between november 15, 2009 and february 15, 2010. Thirty patients ages between 40-50 years were included to study in whom the intravenous fluid treatment was thougth to be ?6 days. Those patients taking antibiotics, catheterized from cephalic or basilic veins for continious fluid treatment within last 1 month, patients with mastectomy or hemiplegic and dialysis patients were excluded to study. The intravenous fluid treatment was made via the cephalic and basilic veins of the both arms and one of closing method applied to right arm and the other to left arm sequentally. Venous catheters were removed at the end of each 3 days and sent to microbiology laboratory for culture. The data were evaluated by percentage analysis, ki-squre test and Fisher? exact test. The mean age of patients was 45.87 years. Fourteen (46.7%) of them were male and 16 (53.3%) of them were female. In sterile gause method, 3% of the catheters were Staphylococcus epidermidis positive and 3% Esherichia Coli positive and any microorganism was observed in 94% of the catheters. In sterile transparent method, 3% of the catheters were Staphylococcus epidermidis positive. There was no significant difference between two methods with respect to microbiologic colonization.Key Words: Peripheric venous catheter, Gauze dressing, Transparent dressing
