The effective of early maladaptive schemas on functioning among patients diagnosed bipolar disorder and unipolar depression

In this study, early maladaptive schemas and the role of these schemes on the functioning of patients with bipolar and unipolar depressive disorder were examined. The sample of this study is formed by 60 psychiatric patients who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder and unipolar depression disorder and 30 normal individuals. In the study, early maladaptive schemes of the participants was assessed with Young Schema Questionnaire- Short Form and level of functioning was assessed with the Global Assessment Scale.A socio demographic form which includes the related variables of healty controls and patients was used.According to the results of the analyzesin patients with unipolar depression, compared to bipolar disorder and the control groupemotional deprivation, pessimism, social isolation, emotional inhibition, dependence, self-sacrificing, punitiveness and vulnerability to harms points; bipolar patients compared to control group failure, dependence, abondonment and defectiveness scores were significantly higher.The schemas which patients being different from each other and effective on functional levels, failure, dependence and defectiveness were for patients with bipolar disorder; emotional deprivation was for patients with unipolar depression disorder. Consequently, it was apparent the scheme pointing to low self-perception in patients with bipolar disorder and has emerged that these could be decisive on the functioning of patients. In patients with depression disorder indicating that negative beliefs and emotional memories schemes within the scope of the cognitive triple have emerged and unlike the others emotional needs of these patients are considered may affect functionality.
