The problems and solutions encountered in the process of selection of elective courses in the fifth and sixth grades in secondary schools

The most precious wealth and heritage of the nations and societies are the qualified manpower. By the effective use of this potential, the education expenditures of the developed and developing countries among the first investments are almost the primary reson. It needs to create the environment and opportunities the students can learn beter to have the qualified manpower. In accordance with the compulsory classes in our schools; the effective course application the individuals can prefer thinking their interests and talents with the democratic view serves this aim. The aim of this work is to examine the elective course application with the thoughts of parents and students in grades 5th and 6th classes in primary schools, tha administrators working in secondary schools and lastly elective course teachers since 2005 and argue by giving solutions to the problems with the obtained findings. The universe of the investigation are in 2014-2015 academic year, the students study in 5th and 6th classes in the state secondary schools and their parents in Bayrampaşa county of İstanbul city, elective course teachers, lastly adminıstrators in these schools. The sample of the investigation covers thirtyfive students in 5th and 6th classes, seven parents in these classes, fourteen elective course teachers have Ali Ülker secondary school in Bayrampaşa county of İstanbul city and lastly six secondary school administrators in Bayrampaşa county. This investigation has been done with a qualitative aproach. The results of the investigation have been obtained by conversations. Semi-structured conversation questions were asked to the attendants about the views of the problems they come across during the period while choosing the elective courses and to give the suggestions about the solutions to these problems. Content analyses was used to solve the abtained results. When we look into the analyses, it is determined the students on the impact of family is much more while choosing the elective courses, it is detected the students and their parents have not been given enough information about the content of the lessons . However there are a lot of elective courses numerically, it appears lack of classes and teachers at schools making dual teaching; because of this it is determined the lessons that are wanted can not be chosen by the students. It is stated that there is a lot of class size, there are not any elective course books and materials, the teachers don't have any in-service training about the subjects, lastly evaluation by giving marks increase the level of anxiety on them. With the findings and results reached wthout investigating, it can be said to provide necessary teacher, material and physical environment in elective course applications, constitute the occasions to make the opportunities the students can take the courses they want and finally the information about the contents and aim of the elective courses must be done on time.
