The effect of reward and punishment in the correction of students unwanted behaviours in elementary schools

Unwanted behaviours are seen in every class and school environment.Every teacher faces with more or less such an action.Teachers must know these bahaviours and techniques to manage class succesfully methods used by teacherd must be ones which change wanted behaviours into wanted ones.Reward and punishment are effective methods used in the correction of behaviours.This survey is done to determine the thoughts of teachers abaut the use of reward and punishment in the correction of unwanted behaviours .This paper is based on the teachers in elementary schools in İstanbul through 2006-2007 academic years.The survey?s example group is taken from the provinces Pendik,Kartal,Tuzla including 250 teachers in İstanbul.In the first section of the survey there is a personel knowledge port which includes 8 questions, in the secand part there are questions to determine the influence of reward and punishment in the correction of unwanted behaviours.The SPSS programme is used to evaluate the survey results applied to the subjects.The results are put into table and interpreted.According to the results of the survey teachers find reward and punishment usage is an effective way for the correction of unwanted behaviours.Moreover teachers find using reward is more effective than using punishment .According to the findings suggestions are developed.Key Words: Unwanted behaviours,reward, punishmentDecember, 2007Hüseyin ARSLAN
