Evaluation of Turkish textbook for second grade in term of image text relation

Foreign studies on the image-text relation focus on creating a taxonomy based on the impact of images on understanding and the functions of images. In domestic studies, instead of research on direct image-text relation, coherence of the images with the text is addressed as a research step while examining course books. In addition, it has been seen that this subject has a confined space literature in primary school level Turkish course books. This study has been carried out with the purpose of determining the relation of the images with the texts in 2nd grade Turkish course book. Research object of the study is 2nd grade Turkish course book Published by DokuYayınevi. In the study, one of qualitative research methods, document review was used and images of the target texts in the 2nd grade Turkish course book (16 texts, 36 images) were included in the study and illustrative elements such as photographs, etc. and images of free reading texts are excluded. "Image-Text Relation Category List" created after literature review is submitted for an expert opinion and a 10-item list was created in accordance with the feedback. Descriptive analysis technique was used for analysing the data. Images and texts evaluated within the scope of "Image-Text Relation Category List" were reported qualitatively and occasionally by making direct quotations from the Turkish course book. As a conclusion, it has been determined that ground-background relation was paid attention in the layout of all images and texts; images were partly positioned in parallel with the content of the text; images supported the titles of the texts; images enabled students to predict the text; figures in the images were not sufficient for corresponding to the emotions within the context; images have references to the concepts in the texts; images supported the intended messages; images in the narrative and informative texts supported the main idea and images in poetry were not sufficient in supporting the main emotion.
