An action research on gaining environmental literacy skills in primary school 4th grade science lesson

Environmental education is of vital importance today in combating the increasingly prevalent environmental issues and constructing a sustainable future. This education encourages people to be environmentally conscious, teaches sustainable use of natural resources, and promotes conscientious and effective action against environmental issues. Environmental education enables individuals to gain sensitivity towards the environment and understand their responsibility in preserving the natural environment. At the same time, environmental education raises awareness among people about environmental threats and helps them develop strategies to cope with these threats. As a result, people can effectively address environmental issues and generate solutions. Environmental literacy, on the other hand, can be considered as a part of environmental education. Environmental literacy enables individuals to acquire knowledge about the environment and apply this knowledge in their daily lives. It allows them to make informed decisions on topics such as natural resource utilization, waste management, energy conservation, and minimize environmental impacts. Environmental education and environmental literacy are important tools for a sustainable future. These educations enhance people's environmental awareness, promote sustainable use of natural resources, and enable them to effectively combat environmental issues. The aim of this research is to enhance environmental literacy skills among 4th-grade students within the scope of science education. The participants of the study consist of 19 fourth-grade elementary school students. At the end of the 12-week action plan, both qualitative and quantitative data collected from the students indicated that their environmental literacy skills had improved. In the study, various environmental topics were explored, and methods deemed most suitable for action were attempted, without limiting the investigation to just one unit, theme, or model. The actions taken increased students' sensitivity to the environment and also supported their ability to make responsible decisions regarding environmental matters. Based on the research process and the obtained results, recommendations have been made to address potential challenges that researchers and teachers may encounter while implementing actions. It is recommended that researchers conduct action research to improve environmental literacy skills in different age groups. Key Words: Environmental Literacy, Action Research, Primary School
