Abstract (EN)
Recent in vivo findings have confirmed the idea that vitamin D may provide advantageous effects on male reproductive capacity. The main objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of sex hormones (especially testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone) as well as vitamin D levels in an infertile male. It was also aimed to examine and diagnose the presence of the BsmI gene polymorphism in the same infertile male subject. The study included 125 individuals admitted to Babylon Maternity Hospital between April and May 2022. The individuals participating in this study were divided into two groups; Control group (50 people) and Patient group (75 people). The results showed a significant decrease (P<0.05) in testosterone levels in the patient group compared to the control group. FSH and LH concentrations of the infertile group were significantly higher (P<0.05) compared to the control group. Serum vitamin D3 concentration in infertile patients showed a statistically significant decrease compared to the control group (P<0.05). When we look at the distribution of BsmI restriction enzyme genotype in the population, we found that out of a total of 75 patients, 45 (62.9%) were AA homozygous, 24 (31.4%) were AG heterozygous and 6 (5.7%) were GG wild type genotyped. In the control group of 50 individuals, 5 (10%) had AA genotype, 35 (70%) had GG genotype and 10 (20%) had AG genotype. The data presented here provide evidence supporting a significant association between smoking and infertility.
