This thesis examines what constitutes a humane life and how it should be lived from three different philosophical perspectives: Cynicism, Objectivism, and the Unity of Being (Wahdat al-Wujud). These approaches interpret the meaning and value of human life in distinct ways, each offering unique insights into how individuals should shape their lives. Cynicism, known through the teachings of Diogenes in Ancient Greece, advocates for a natural and simple life. Cynics reject societal norms and luxury, emphasizing individual freedom and harmony with nature. From this perspective, a humane life is grounded in simplicity and naturalness. Objectivism, developed by 20th-century thinker Ayn Rand, emphasizes individual freedom and rationality. Objectivism posits that each person should act rationally to maximize their own happiness. In this view, a humane life involves realizing one's potential and staying true to one's values. The Unity of Being (Wahdat al-Wujud), developed in Islamic mysticism by Ibn al-Arabi, asserts that everything in the universe reflects the divine reality of Allah. This perspective encourages individuals to see themselves and the universe as part of a divine whole. A humane life, therefore, is about experiencing this unity and reaching divine truth. The thesis compares and contrasts these three perspectives on humane living. This comparative analysis aims to provide a meaningful and applicable guide for contemporary individuals.
