Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to examine the influence of dietary fiber intake on depression and quality of life in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. The research was conducted at Kartal 3rd Family Health Center between March and May 2023, involving 120 patients (mean age: 56.7±10.44, M/F= 38/82) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Data collection included participants' completed forms and retrospective records of their three-day food intake. Anthropometric measurements were taken during the interviews. The study utilized the "Beck Depression Inventory for Primary Care" and the "SF-36 Quality of Life Scale." The dietary fiber intake over three days for the participants was found to be 17.27±6.56 g. The mean depression scale score was 3.79. Significant negative correlations were observed between depression and the sub- dimensions of the quality of life scale (p<0.05). According to the study's findings, good quality of life is associated with reduced depression. Depression scale scores showed a statistically significant difference across various levels of physical activity (p<0.05), providing evidence of the positive impact of regular physical activity on reducing depression and improving the quality of life. However, there was no significant relationship between dietary fiber intake and quality of life or depression (p>0.05). Despite this, dietary fiber remains crucial in managing diabetes and its complications. Hence, adhering to recommended levels of dietary fiber intake could prove beneficial. Additionally, "physical activity" holds significant importance for this patient group as it enhances their quality of life through mental health benefits. Key words: Type 2 diabetes, Depression, Dietary fiber intake, Quality of life
