Abstract (EN)

The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, prepared by the Council of Europe, was signed in Istanbul on 11 May 2011. That is why it is called the Istanbul Convention. This important step taken to prevent violence against women was reflected positively in the news of the newspapers. However, after a while the contract was signed, it became the subject of controversy. As a matter of fact, the contract was canceled on 20 May 2021 on the grounds that it disrupted the family structure and increased homosexuality. The study aims to show how the signing and abolition of the Istanbul Convention was presented in the mainstream media newspapers Sabah, Turkey with conservative right ideology, Hürriyet Newspaper that shifted from center to right ideology, and Cumhuriyet, Sözcü and Birgün newspapers with opposition left ideology. The newspapers selected for the sample of the study were analyzed by using the critical discourse analysis method of Teun A. Van Dijk.
