Abstract (EN)

It has been reported that the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidal tendency are observed at high rates in firefighters. In addition, it is known that post-traumatic stress disorder is a predictor of suicidal ideation. Considering the negative consequences of suicidal thoughts, investigating protective factors such as psychological resilience that may weaken the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and suicide can provide important information on how to break the negative feedback loop in the process ranging from post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms to suicide. In this respect, the aim of this study is to examine the moderating role of resilience in the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and suicidal ideation. The convinience sample of this study in the cross-sectional and relationship-seeking pattern consisted of the Fire Brigade Group Chiefs of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, the Fire Department and 316 fire brigade personnel working within the Fire Station. Data were collected by demographic form, Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, Traumatic Stress Symptoms Scale, and Suicidal Ideation Scale. In the analysis of the data, the moderator analysis (Model II) in the SPSS process extension was used. Highly experienced traumatic stress symptoms were found to be related to the increase in suicidal ideation (p <0.05). It was found that resilience did not have a direct effect on suicidal ideation (p> 0.05). It was found that the relationship between traumatic stress symptoms and suicidal ideation was at the highest level at low resilience level (p <0.05), while this relationship was not significant at medium and high resilience level (p> 0.05). It was determined that resilience alleviated by regulating the relationship between traumatic stress symptoms and suicidal ideation. It may be beneficial to develop or implement resilience based intervention programs to enable firefighters to manage traumatic stress symptoms and suicidal thoughts associated with these symptoms more effectively.
