Examination of the relationship between personality traits and gender roles of women athletes

The study is carried out to examine the relationship between female athletes' personality traits and gender roles. In this Research, the avarage age is 21.05 ± 2.52, 330 female athletes are participated who are boxing in the championship level in Turkey for Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, Taekwondo and Wushu in 2018 and 2019. In addition to the personal information form prepared by the researcher for the participants, Type A and B Personality Typologies Inventory developed by Friedman and Rosenman (1974), and adapted Turkish by Aktaş (1988), BEM Gender Role Inventory developed by Bem (1974) and adapted Turkish by Özkan and Lajunen (2005) are used. In the evaluation of the data, T Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis Test were used. In ANOVA Analysis, the Games-Howell Test is used to determine which groups the difference is caused by, and Spearman Correlation Analysis is used to determine the relationship between personality traits and gender roles. As a result, it is determide that mothers and fathers are effective in strating sports of female atheletes and the strong, leader and understanding personality trait of the role model person is found to be of high level. Athletes with Kick Boxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Boxing and Wushu show type A personality traits. It is determined that the atheletes have the highest type A personality scores in the Wushu branch and the lowest in the Kick Boxing branch. mong the female athletes participating in the study, it is seen that the avarage masculine gender role is the highest in Muay thai atheletes and the lowest in Taekwondo atheletes; the avarege femine gender role is the highest in Taekwondo and the lowest for muay thai athletes, the indeterminate gender role is the highest in wushu atheletes and the lowest in Taekwondo atheletes. It is concluded that there is significant difference between the feminine gender role according to the sports age variable, the masculine gender role and undetermined gender roles don't differ significantly. The personality scores of the atheletes whose role model gender is female are significantly higher than the personality scores of the atheletes who take the person as a role model in the male gender. Atheletes who display an uncertain gender role model are most influenced by the compassionate, understanding and kindess of the person they take as a role model. A positive and significant relationship is found between personality traits and gender roles of female athletes participating in the study.
