Solid waste management and the new applications to the recycling of soli̇d waste: The example of Trabzon

The destruction or disposal of all waste materials produced by people during their lifetime can be considered as one of the most important problems of cities. The solutions used to solve this problem in different countries until today have not been very successful due to the technology that does not care about the environment and human health. We can evaluate the reasons for this as the ambition of people to make a lot of money, the disregard of the technologies used in human health and the insensitivity to the environment; However, in recent years, many studies have been conducted on the disposal of solid wastes, which we can define as environmentally friendly. With these technological studies, important developments are taking place in order to bring waste to the economy as a source of income instead of being a problem. In this study, a study was carried out and evaluated on the disposal of solid wastes with the best method. There are many technologies available for solid waste disposal. Different technologies are used depending on the content of the waste. The applicability and sustainability advantages of gasification technology are more than other technologies. In the Eastern Black Sea Region, depending on the nature of the waste, gasification technology may be appropriate and it has been effective in choosing this technology with the belief that it will be more beneficial for people and the environment. In the first part of the thesis, problems related to solid waste are presented. By emphasizing the purpose and importance of the study, it was stated that the quality of life of people will increase with the necessity of a healthy environment with solid disposal. In the second part, description and scope of definitions related to solid waste are emphasized. It is emphasized how solid wastes should be collected and the benefits we will gain in recycling them to the economy. In the third chapter, the importance of packaging waste and waste collection centers in solid waste management, their characteristics, how they are applied and their place and importance in waste management are emphasized. In the fourth chapter, the current situation in solid waste management has been explained and by taking into consideration the disposal methods of landfill, incineration and fermentation, researches have been made and information has been given on the working principles of these systems. In the fifth chapter, by using waste characterization studies, population calculations and calorific value results in Trabzon region, the applicability of the gasification system, which is one of the thermal method applications, for Trabzon was investigated. It was emphasized how the collection systems should be in order for this system to be successful and applicable, what should the central government, non-governmental organizations, local administrations and waste generators do. With the results and suggestions, the contribution of the thesis writer and his approach in recycling the waste to the economy are stated. With this study in integrated solid waste management, the conditions under which the gasification system should be applied for Trabzon and the advantages it will provide to the environment and human health as a result of the implementation of this system have been stated.
