The story of the believing man in the Qur'ân

ABSTRACT The Qur'ân, the primary source of Islam, frequently invites humanity to the truth. It appeals not only to human intellect but also to emotions, guiding people to the right path. One of the persuasive and guiding mechanisms of the Qur'ân is the recounting of striking historical events. As a result, the Qur'ân includes numerous stories of prophets and their communities. The sole purpose of these narratives is to serve the overarching goal of the Qur'ân's revelation. In this context, Qur'ânic stories contain countless messages for humanity. Among these is the story of the Believing Man found in verses 23–46 of Surah Al-Mu'min/Ghafir. While most prophetic stories in the Qur'ân also appear in earlier divine scriptures, the story of the Believing Man is unique to the Qur'ân and is not mentioned in any other sacred text. Therefore, its primary source is the Qur'ân itself. This story narrates the struggle of the Believing Man, a member of Pharaoh's household, against Pharaoh's tyranny as he defends Islam, monotheism, and Prophet Musa. When Pharaoh, driven by despair, declared, "Let me kill Musa..." (Al-Mu'min, 40/26), the Believing Man intervened at a critical moment, arguing that a person who declares "My Lord is Allah" cannot be killed unjustly. He openly initiated a defense of the truth. With wisdom, the Believing Man invited his people to reflection and called them to the right path through advice and admonition. To achieve this, he appealed to their intellect, reasoning, and emotions. His impactful discourse succeeded in disrupting Pharaoh's intentions. While Pharaoh did not immediately embrace faith, he failed to achieve his goal and could not harm Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). Allah protected the Believing Man from all forms of harm by his people and supported him with patience and sincerity in his struggle. Comprising over twenty verses, this story is so comprehensive in covering its central themes that it serves as a concise yet profound reflection of the Qur'ân itself.
