Abstract (EN)
Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In Libya, the burden of CHD is exacerbated by a high prevalence of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes. This study evaluates the diagnostic potential of clotting factors—specifically prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT), international normalized ratio (INR), and D-dimer—and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as early biomarkers for CHD among diabetic patients in Libya. A total of 150 subjects were studied, comprising 75 diabetic patients and 75 healthy controls. Various statistical analyses, including t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and logistic regression, were conducted to assess the differences and predictive capabilities of these biomarkers. The findings revealed significant elevations in PTT, INR, and hs-CRP levels in the diabetic group, with hs-CRP showing particular promise as an early indicator of CHD risk. These results support the use of hs-CRP and selected clotting parameters in the early detection and risk stratification of CHD in diabetic populations. Further studies are recommended to validate these findings and to integrate these biomarkers into clinical practice for improved cardiovascular outcomes in Libya.
