Peer bullying and victimization in high school students: Examples of Madenli District

Aim: This study examines the frequency of peer bullying and victimization behaviors in high school students, how peer bulling and victimization changes according to demographic features. Material and Method: The descriptive study was conducted between dates 20th May and 9th June, 2016 with the participation of 478 students from Science and Vocational High School on the same campus as the school boards in Madenli District of Rize city. Ethical committee permits and requests were received to collect the data. Peer bullying identification scale, a teenager form and gathered via a face to face meeting with students based on their self - reports. The data were evaluated on the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) rest, one way analysis of variance, T-test independent groups and TUKEY test were used as well as the calculation of avarange and percentage. Findings: In the study, among our students, "discomfort by doing hand-arm joke" bullying 18.2% and victimization 23.6% were found common. Physical bullying 51.6% and victimization 46% was found much more than others type. When we look at the average level according to the class level, the 9th grade was found as more bully and victim than the other classes. Bullying is mostly in school boards at the rate of, and 17.3%. 62.1% of the students responded "I would defend myself" and 45.4% said "I would ask for help from a friend" when they face with bullying. 54% of the interventions are applied as "disciplinary punihment". Conclusion: Necessary measures should be taken for the 9th grade students and the students who are on board for risk groups for physical bullying and victim behaviors among the students.
