The importance of logic in teaching mathematics and the level of implementing logic in textbooks

It is the fact that all the developments in the modern world are knowledge- based. It is seen that considering this reality, those communities which bring the education approach to the fore that can be used logically are more successful. Mathematics is one of the main areas of knowledge-based world. Because the purpose of the Mathematics is to educate individuals who are developed in comparison and able to see the events in a logical sequence. In this sense, it can be said that the goals of the mathematics and logic are same. It is clearly visible when the histories of the mathematics and logic are examined. The relationship between mathematics and logic are investigated together in this study. It is then tried to determine the level of application in mathematics textbooks of 6th grades. Mathematics textbooks which are taught in Eastern Anatolia Region during 2012 ? 2013 Academic Year were analiyzed. In order to collect data, a scala which is based on the textbook of 6th grade was applied to the Maths teachers of primary education that consists of 25 items named ? The Importance of logic in teaching Mathematics and Application Level in the textbook of the 6th grade? . Statistical software package was used for the analysis of the applied scale. The scale was evaluated in three sub-dimensions according to the research sub-problems. These dimensions are "the importance of logic in teaching mathematics, Comparison of some topics in the Maths textbook of 6th grade students and students? logic levels, weaknesses of the Maths textbook of 6th grade in terms of improving the students? logic? As a result, It has emerged that relationship between mathematics and logic should be given much more attention. Furthermore, it is concluded that order of the some subjects should be changed in order to strengthen the mathematical logic at the 6th grade. It is identified that some of the topics in the 6th grade textbook are over the academic level of the students' logic and the textbook has deficiencies in terms of improving students? logic levels.
