Adaptation of compassionate care assessment tool to Turkish culture: A validity and reliability study

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to prepare the Turkish version of the "Compassionate Care Assessment Tool" and to perform the validity and reliability study. Material and Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 300 adult patients hospitalized in the internal and surgical clinics of a public hospital in Ankara. Research data were collected with the Information Form and the "Compassionate Care Assessment Tool". Frequency, percentage, correlation analysis, Cronbach Alpha Analysis, Explanatory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: In the study, Explanatory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were performed to determine the construct validity of the scale. It was determined that the KMO value of the scale was 0.902, and the chi-square value obtained as a result of the Barlett Sphericity Test was significant (χ2(153) = 1779.100 p<0.01). As a result of the explanatory factor analysis performed with Varimax rotation, it was determined that the scale items were grouped under three factors with an eigenvalue greater than one. The overlapping items in the scale were excluded from the analysis and an ideal structure with 18 items and three factors was obtained. These factors were named as "Vocational Competence", "Spiritual Dimension" and "Communication". As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis performed to evaluate the validity of the factor structure that emerged based on the results of the explanatory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale confirmed the three-factor structure and that the items and sub-factors were related to the scale. When the Cronbach Alpha coefficients of the scale were examined, it was determined that it was between 0.742 for the patient's compassionate care factor perception aspect, between 0.632- 0.707 for the sub-factors, 0.872 for the evaluation of the compassionate care provided by the nurse, between 0.749- 0.798 for the sub-factors, and 0.914 for the overall Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale. The lowest test-retest measurement correlation coefficients of the scale were 0.758; the highest was found to be 0.933. Conclusion: It was determined that the Turkish version of the scale, all of which was likert type, was valid and reliable with 18 items and three factor structures. The scale has been brought to Turkish society as a measurement tool that can be used in the evaluation of compassionate care. Keywords: Compassion, Compassionate Care, Reliability, Validity.
