Muallim Cevdet (Inançalp), his personality as an educator and historianism

In this study, the life of the educator, historian, archivist and librarian Muallim Mehmet Cevdet Inançalp (1883-1935), who left permanent traces in the history of Turkish education in the recent period, his activities in the fields of education and history are discussed. The life of Muallim Cevdet, who started his education life in Bolu and continued first in Istanbul and then in Baku, Russia and Europe as both an educator and a student is the subject of the study because it is intertwined with the educational approach, political and social life of this period. The change and transformation in this period when important developments took place that ended the political existence of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye began to develop, is tried to be analyzed by focusing on the activities of Muallim Cevdet, who played an active role first as a student and then as an educator. The main purpose of the study is to examine the importance of Muallim Cevdet on Turkish history and the history of Turkish education. In this thesis, prepared by adopting a qualitative research approach, a literature review related to Muallim Cevdet has been conducted and the structure of the study has been formed by examining archival documents that have primary source value. This method of analysis includes the primary research methods used to understand Cevdet's mindset, research methods and the spirit of the period. The study is organized under three main headings by centering Muallim Cevdet İnançalp. In the first chapter, under the title of Muallim Cevdet's portrait, a framework is drawn with under the headings such as his family, life, personality, and the environment in which he grew up in. In the second chapter, under the title of his personality as an educator, his views on education are included. In the third chapter, his historiography and views in the academic field are tried to be analyzed based on the articles and books he published and the notes of his unpublished works. In conclusion, Muallim Cevdet came to the forefront as an important educator in the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic. He evaluated the national and universal dimensions of the education system together Cevdet's philosophy of education embraces an understanding that involves not only the acquisition of knowledge by students but also the development of their character. His identity as a historian, on the other hand, offers a wide-ranging approach that deals with events not only chronologically but also in their cultural and geographical contexts.
