An examination of theatrical and realistic impression in Muhsin Ertuğrul and Lütfi Ömer Akad

Cinema is one of the branches of art with the widest and most powerful borders. One of the main reasons for having these features is that it has different branches of art such as painting, music, photography and interacts with these branches of art. One of the arts that it interacts with is undoubtedly the art of theatre. The art of cinema uses similar materials such as staging, composition, mise-en-scene, lighting and acting together with the art of theater. The mutual interactions of cinema and theater still continue today. However, the manifestation of theatrical inspirations in the cinema may cause some negative discussions. Because in some films, whether adapted from a theatrical play or not, theatrical features come to the fore rather than cinematic features. It is possible to see the traces of this situation, which is mentioned in world cinema and Turkish cinema in particular. While some directors from the theater ecole in Turkish cinema continue the traces of theatricality in their cinemas, some directors adopt a film language and a realistic cinema style independent of the theater. Within the scope of this study, the theatrical effect in the cinema of Muhsin Ertuğrul, the leading director of the Theater Players Period of Turkish cinema, and the realistic effect in the cinema of Lütfi Ömer Akad, the leading director of the Filmmakers Period, are examined. The realistic and theatrical effect in the directors' films are examined in the context of theatrical acting and realistic acting in the directors' selected films, and in addition, in the context of mise-en-scène, fiction, story and character. The films that are the subject of the study are determined by random sampling method and analyzed by descriptive analysis method. In this context, films are read through the concepts of theatricality and realism. From this point of view, it is focused on how the theatrical and realistic effect in the cinemas of the directors builds a meaning on the films.
