Abstract (EN)
Obesity and Overweight are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used in classifying overweight and obesity in adult populations and individuals. Overweight and obesity lead to serious health consequences. Various anthropometric measurements are used in the determination of obesity. The most commonly used anthropometric measurement is BMI, on the other hand there were several anthropometric measurements defined. However, that is uncertain which anthropometric measurement is more relevant for prediction of obesity related cardio metabolic complications. In our study totally 1924 (F: 1564, M: 360) overweight and obesity patients who are 25≥BMI were included. And patients who have history of any chronic disease instead of hypertension were excluded. All patients divided into 4 groups according to BMI as "pre-obese, obese stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3". All patients' anthropometric measurement data were recorded and cardiovascular risk profile as the lipid profile (cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and inflammatory parameters (WBC, CRP-hs and uric acid) were obtained. Anthropometric measurements were compared separately with BMI and cardiovascular risk profiles in both sexes. In the results we observed a positive correlation in the degree of obesity with markers of cardio metabolic risk in both sexes. BMI has a good correlation with metabolic syndrome components and biochemical parameters. However, in assessing predictive of cardio metabolic risk, BMI superiority over other measurement techniques are controversial. International studies of existing conventional measurements in terms of cardio metabolic risk assessment, there are different opinions regarding the superiority of one another. Genetic and environmental factors, diet and personal habits and physical activity levels from person to person will vary and obesity-induced cardio metabolic complications in the formation of those driving factors also have an impact and that of confounding factors in studies of disposing challenges existing differences of opinion may be the reason. Therefore it is appears to be the need for prospective studies which have minimized potential confounding factors.
