The aim of this research is to analyse the correlation between loneliness and shyness among high school students

The aim of this research is to analyse the correlation between loneliness and shyness among high school students.The research area is the high schools which are located in Tuzla, İstanbul in 2011-2012 education year. The sample of research is constituted of 259 high school students. The ?UCLA ( University of California Los Angeles) Loneliness Scale? and ?Shyness Scale? were used in the study in order to collect data from the students. The scale, consisting of three parts, has personal information in the first part. There are 20 expressions of attitudes about loneliness in the second part of the scale. And in the third part; there are 20 evaluation items in order to measure shyness level.The data obtained through the scales were coded and the SPSS package was used in the analyses of the data. The frequency and distribution of level is done for the first part of the scale. In relation to determine the peception and attitude of the teachers, for showing the differences among mean, standarddeviation and attitudes the t-test was used in binary comparisons for independent groups. On the other hand, one way anova was used fort he comparisons of the various groups more than two. Whether there is a meaningful difference between opinions or not, was tested on a =0,005 level of significance.The findings of the research are given below:1.The loneliness and shyness level of the students are in the middle level.2.Comparison of the loneliness and shyness levels of the students with respect to the gender, it is seen that the loneliness level of male students is higher than female students. On the other hand, there is no statistical difference between female and male students in terms of shyness level.3.When loneliness and shyness levels of the students are evaluated according to the ages of the students , it is seen that the loneliness level of the students who are at the age of 15 is higher than that of 16 and older. When we look at the shyness level, it is seen that this level is higher for 15 years old students when compared with 14 years old ones.4.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are examined according to the students? grades, it is seen that the loneliness score of the 9th grade students are higher than that of 10th grade students. There is not statistical difference in relation to the shyness level between the groups.5.When loneliness and shyness levels of the students are evaluated according to their schools, it is seen that loneliness and shyness levels of vocational high school students are higher than high school students.6.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are evaluated according to jobs of their fathers, there is not statistical difference between groups.7.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are evaluated according to jobs of their mothers, there is not significant difference between groups.8.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are evaluated according to their fathers? educational level; it is seen that these levels are higher fort he students whose fathers were graduated from primary schools than graduated from a high school or a college.9.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are evaluated according to their mothers? educational level; it is seen that these levels are higher fort he students whose mothers were graduated from primary schools than graduated from a high school or a college.10.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are evaluated according to the district of the students ; it is seen that there is not statistical difference between groups.11.When loneliness and shyness levels of the students are evaluated according to the houses where they live; it is seen that loneliness level is higher for the students who live at rental house (who don?t have their own house) than who live in their own house. About shyness level, there is not statistical difference between groups.12.When loneliness and shyness levels of students are evaluated according to the income of their family; it is seen that these levels are higher fort he students whose families have lower income than who have higher income.13.When loneliness and shyness levels of the students are evaluated according to the member numbers of their family , there is not statistical difference between groups.14.The relation between loneliness scale and shyness scale has a positive correlation statistically.The higher the loneliness,shyness is even higher.Key Words: loneliness, shyness, social skills, feelings, handling problems
