Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out to investigate hedonic hunger and sleep deprivation in secondary school students, and the nutritional status of these two factors and their relationship with each other. The study was carried out with a total of 398 students, 175 girls and 253 boys, aged 10-14 in a secondary school in Ankara between May-June 2022. A questionnaire form was applied to the students by the researcher. The questionnaire form consists of general and health information, nutritional habits, food consumption table, "Children's Power of Food Scale-Turkish (C-PFS-T)" and "Sleep Deprivation Scale for Children and Adolescents". The total mean score of the students'C-PFS-T was 2.9±0.85, and the mean of the total score of the students'Sleep Deprivation Scale was 32.2±10.13. The girls'Sleep Deprivation Scale total mean score on was 33.4±9.74, and the mean total score on C-PFS-T was 3.0±0.85. The mean total score of the men Sleep Deprivation Scale was 31.3±10.34, and the mean total score of the C-PFS-T was 2.9±0.83. There was no significant difference in terms of gender in the total scores of the scale (p>0.05). The total C-PFS-T score of the students was found to be 2.9±0.88 in the body mass index (BMI) Z-score, 3.0±0.81 in the normal ones, and 2.9±0.94 in the obese. The total C-PFS-T score of the students with abdominal obesity was 2.8±0.85, and 3.0±0.84 for those without. There was no significant difference between the total score of C-PFS-T according to the anthropometric values of the participants (p>0.05). The total score on Sleep Deprivation Scale was found to be 30.7±9.07 in those with weak BMI for age, 31.6±10.00 in those with normal and 32.1±10.80 in the obese. In the students with abdominal obesity, the total score of Sleep Deprivation Scale was found to be 32.4±10.09, and 32.1±10.16 in the students without abdominal obesity. There was no significant difference in the total score of the students according to their anthropometric values (p>0.05). The total score of the students who consumed breakfast was 31.2±10.12, 34.9±8.94 for those who sometimes consumed it, and the difference was found to be significant (p<0.05). The C-PFS-T total score of those who preferred to eat hamburger pizza/ice cream dessert/toast sandwich pastry outside the home was found to be significantly higher than those who did not (p<0.05). Those who prefer ice cream sweet/fizzy drinks have a higher total score on Sleep Deprivation Scale than those who do not (p<0.05). The C-PFS-T total score of the female students who consumed the vegetable group below the recommended portion in the Turkish Dietary Guidelines (TUBER) was 3.1±0.88, and 2.8±0.79 for those who consumed it equal to or above the recommended portion, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The total score of those who consumed milk and products group in female students and vegetable group in males under TUBER portion was significantly higher than those who consumed equal or higher than the recommended (p<0.05). There is a positive and significant relationship between the students' total score on Sleep Deprivation Scale and C-PFS-T total score (r:0.245, p<0.05). It was concluded that the total score of Sleep Deprivation Scale had an effect of 6% (R2:0.060) on the total score of C-PFS-T and it was statistically significant (p<0.05). As a result, hedonic hunger and sleep deprivation are associated with eating habits and each other in secondary school students. Awareness should be raised to prevent hedonic hunger and improve sleep deprivation in children in this age group. Keywords: Hedonic hunger, sleep deprivation, nutrition, adolescence
