Researching the reasons of secondary school students' failure in mathematics lessons in terms of various factors

This research has a characteristics of a descriptive study based on scanning made as well as a qualitative study applied with the aim of determining the opinions related to the reason of secondary school student failure in mathematics. In the research, the information is given about the items bringing failure, success and failuremathematics curriculum, mathematics teaching with scanning the resources related to the topic. The population of the research includes 13 teachers and 26 students which are chosen randomly from the schools in Elazığ in 2017-2018 school year. Qualitative research design is applied in this research. The semi-structured interview form is applied to the student and the teachers in the sample. In the analysis of the datum acquired from the result of application, it is benefitted from N-Vivo 12 programme. At the end of the research, students' being prejudiced toward lesson, peer victimization, insufficient mathematic lesson hours, using education system based on rate-learning, not being prepared in lessons, not knowing the subject in advance, sitting with whom and where; talkative, unsuccessful, with opposite sex, sitting at the back side of the class, study habits; studying less, studying irregular, being disorder of the class, insufficient number of questions in the school (lesson) books, impoverished families, families' being at a low level of education, having complicated solved examples, families' not helpful to their children to their lessons and home works, home conditions' and work environment's not being convenient to study, not having enough additional resources to study are among some factors causing the failure in mathematics lesson. However, Math teachers' using some equipments in lessons, using reference book, being prepared in lessons, measuring methods, reading curriculum in advance, the temperature of learning environment and the quantity of light, the techniques of students' studying are not among the factors causing the failure in mathematics lesson.
