The relati̇on between problem solvi̇ng i̇n math and readi̇ng comprehensi̇on ski̇ll

The main aim of that study is to indicate how the reading skills affect the success of learners on math problem solving for fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grade learners at secondary school. The study is a descriptive research by those sides. The study was carried out by using as a single, pretest and aftertest from premodels. The study was applied on fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grade learners of Yeniköy secondary school studying in Darende which is a district of Malatya. While The main universe of the study involves the secondary schools which states in Darende district of Malatya, sample of the study involves fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grade learners in Yeniköy secondary school. To ease the implementation of the study,44 samples was applied in the study in suitable sample way. Reading Comprehension skill test and math achievement test are applied in the study. Spss program was used for analyses. To indicate the relation between reading comprehension skills and math problem solving skills, Pearson moment multiplication correlation, t test to understand whether they are homogeneous or not and relevance tests such as anova variance analysis. At the end of the study, aftertest averages of the reading comprehension test were higher than the averages of the pretest. Then, it was indicated that test was meaningful. When the correlation between reading comprehension skills and the math problem solving skills were researced, the correlation was nearly high and meaningful for fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grade learners. When the same correlation analysis was applied on last tests, meaningful relation wasn't found for seveth and eight grades while there was a high and meaningful relation was found for fifth and sixth grade learners. For all grades, the achievement of the students loving to read was higher than the others saying that they didn't like reading in a meaningful way. While the learners who are problem solving skill is high are successful in türkish, science and social studies for fifth and sixth grades, middle level meaningful relation was found just for seventh grade science lessson. For eight grade learners, there wasn't any relation between problem solving achievement test and the other lessons. Some more suggestions were found by the help of the obtained results.
