Evaluation of secondary school teachers' awareness of curriculum and instructional planning

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the awareness of secondary school teachers about curriculum and instructional planning. The universe of the research consists of secondary school teachers working in the city center of Elazig in 2021-2022. The sample of the study consists of 239 secondary school teachers selected by using easily accessible sampling method in quantitative dimension, and 41 secondary school teachers selected by convenient sampling method from non-random sampling methods in qualitative dimension. In the research, a mixed method with both qualitative and quantitative research designs was used. The case study design was used in the qualitative dimension of the research. In the quantitative dimension of the research, the descriptive survey model was used. The "Curriculum Awareness Scale" developed by Pektaş and Pesen (2021) was used to collect quantitative data. The scale consists of 25 items and three dimensions: "Psycomotor awareness, cognitive awareness and affective awareness". The Cronbach alpha reliability value of the curriculum awareness scale is .959. In the analysis of quantitative data; frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, "t" test and "one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)" tests were applied. "Interview form for secondary school teachers' teaching planning levels" developed by the researcher was used to collect qualitative data. Content analysis was used in the analysis of qualitative data. According to the quantitative data of the study, it was seen that the opinions of secondary school teachers about the awareness levels of the curriculum were high. In addition, there was no significant difference between the views of teachers on the level of awareness of the curriculum and the variables of gender, professional seniority, branch, educational status and graduated faculty. It is possible to increase teachers' awareness of the curriculum about the updated curriculum, where teachers can find more place in these updating processes, more importance is given to their evaluations, and the establishment of a system that will give feedback to teachers in this direction. Taking into account today's conditions, increasing and diversifying in-service training activities and reaching all teachers can contribute to raising awareness about teaching planning, implementation and curricula. In the qualitative dimension of the research; Secondary school teachers stated that planning education is educationally necessary, and that the documents or variables that are based on when planning education are usually student characteristics and physical conditions. The teachers stated that they take care to do the teaching planning studies together with their groups, that the school conditions as well as the country conditions should be taken into account when planning the education, that they found the curriculum in general positive, but that they had some problems in terms of content and implementation. In addition to having positive opinions about the textbooks, it was determined that the majority of the teachers who participated in the study had negative opinions about the relevance of the books to the student, clarity and intelligibility, insufficient content, unnecessary details and being out of date. All of the teachers stated that it is necessary and beneficial to plan the education, but it was determined that the teachers did not make any effort to prepare a plan, and they used the annual plans that they obtained from the internet.
