Analysis of activities related to word types in secondary school Turkish textbooks

Language teaching systematics is based on the acquisition/development of basic language skills and the teaching of grammar and vocabulary of the target language. Accordingly, in language teaching; reading, listening, writing and speaking skills, vocabulary and grammar emerge as learning areas. Within these learning areas, grammar teaching includes the objectives to define language in terms of sound, form, sentence and meaning. Grammar is the area where students discover language awareness due to recognising the structure and limits of language. Within this area, teaching vocabulary and vocabulary types is significant with the dimension of comprehension and expression for power of students' language usage. In Turkish language education, teaching vocabulary is carried out in order to the individual to use his/her language, which is the gateway to life, competently. Textbooks have a determining feature in terms of being the main material in teaching processes. Examining the textbooks, which are prepared in accordance with the curriculum and the aims of it, in terms of the fields within the language teaching systematics and special subjects within these fields will be a guide to create more efficient course materials. For this reason, this study was carried out to examine which activities are used for teaching vocabulary types in secondary school Turkish textbooks and to contribute to the field. This study, which aims to determine the distribution of activities related to teaching vocabulary in secondary school Turkish textbooks according to grade levels, vocabulary types, basic language skills and the status according to the achievements in the Turkish Language Teaching Programme, is a descriptive research in qualitative research method. Within the scope of the research, the activities in Turkish textbooks were analysed and evaluated by document analysis method in line with the themes specified in the purpose of the study. As a result of the research, it was determined that the activities related to teaching vocabulary in secondary school Turkish textbooks are not balanced according to grade levels, the most common vocabulary teaching activity is related to verbs, the majority of the activities are related to writing skills, there are a total of 21 objectives that can be associated with the teaching of vocabulary types in the Turkish Lesson Teaching Programme and these objectives are not distributed evenly according to word types and skill areas.
