Abstract (EN)

Purpose: This research was conducted as a cross-sectional descriptive study in order to evaluate the knowledge of health professionals and staff working in private hospitals about the Istanbul Convention and their attitudes towards gender roles. Materials and Methods: The data of the study were collected from the online platform between 17.11.2021 and 06.01.2022. The sample of the study consisted of 300 people working in a private hospital. In the first and second parts of the data collection form, there are socio-demographic and introductory information (12 questions) of health professionals and personnel who participated in the research and prepared in line with the literature, and questions about the Istanbul Convention (6 questions). In the third part, "Gender Roles Attitude Scale" (38 questions) was used. Results: 68% of the participants are women, 32% are men, and half of the sample is nurses. 60% of those who find it a right decision for Turkey to withdraw their signature from the Istanbul Convention, which it has signed, say that it is against Turkish customs and morals, 50% encourage homosexuality, and 85% say that concepts such as sexual orientation and gender identity do not contribute to the structure of Turkish society. He gave reasons for non-compliance. It can be said that the participants in the research have egalitarian gender role attitudes in general, considering the average total score they got from the Gender Roles Attitude Scale (TCRTÖ) is 146.61±25.68 and the highest score that can be obtained from the scale is 190. Considering the differentiation of the TCRTÖ scores according to the descriptive characteristics of the participants, it was noted that there was a significant difference in all descriptive features, namely gender, marital status, education level, monthly income level, place of birth, occupation, family type and marriage type. Among the questions about the Istanbul Convention, "Do you know about the Istanbul Convention?", "Have you heard of the concept of gender before?", "Do you think it is the right decision for Turkey to withdraw its signature from the Istanbul Convention that it signed?" and "Will violence against women increase when Turkey withdraws from the Istanbul Convention?" When evaluated in terms of the variables that gave positive answers to the questions, it was noted that there were groups with higher scores in the total mean score of TCRTÖ. Conclusion: It was determined that most of the health professionals and personnel included in the study had knowledge about the Istanbul Convention. In this study, it has been observed that men, individuals with low education levels have less knowledge of the Istanbul Convention and exhibit a traditional attitude in terms of gender equality. For this reason, it is recommended to have classes on gender roles at the primary school level along with in-service training in the hospital. Key Words: Gender Roles, Gender Equality Woman, Istanbul Convention
