Retrospective evaluation of clinical and laboratory parameters in patients undergoing parathyroidectomy

Objective:Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a disease characterized by excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) from one or more of the four parathyroid glands. The disease affects many organ systems and causes various symptoms. Surgical removal of abnormal parathyroid glands is the most effective treatment for the disease.This study aims to present the preoperative and postoperative variables of patients operated for PHPT. Method:This study includes 35 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy operation. Biochemical tests and anthropometric measurements taken during routine controls will be evaluated in patients diagnosed with parathyroid adenoma and followed up after parathyroidectomy.At the same time,carotid intima-media thickness measured by ultrasonography and epicardial adipose tissue thickness measured by transthoracic echocardiography were included in the study. Result:A significant difference was found in PTH,calcium,phosphorus and 24-hour urine values in preoperative and postoperative laboratory values (p<0.001). Anthropometric measurements were found to be statistically similar before and after the operation (p:0.883).A significant decrease in carotid intima media thickness was detected in patients who underwent parathyroidectomy compared to the preoperative period (p<0.001).There was no significant difference in epicardial adipose tissue thickness before and after the operation (p:0.798).No correlation was found between CIMT and epicardial adipose tissue thicknesses measured in the postoperative period and laboratory parameters. Conclusion:It was determined that CIMT level decreased significantly after parathyroidectomy.There was no correlation between CIMT measured in the postoperative period and laboratory parameters.
