Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT: This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to determine pediatric nurses' level of knowledge, attitudes, and challenges encountered in clinical practice regarding atraumatic care. The study was conducted with 130 nurses working at the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, between November 1 and December 1, 2024. No sampling was performed, and the entire population was targeted. Data were collected using a demographic information form and a questionnaire developed by the researcher to assess knowledge and practice levels related to atraumatic care. The findings revealed that nurses had a moderate level of knowledge about atraumatic care and implemented some related practices in clinical settings. However, this knowledge was not fully reflected in practice, and both individual and institutional barriers limited the implementation. Significant differences were found between participants' demographic and professional characteristics and their levels of knowledge and practice concerning atraumatic care. Particularly, professional experience, the unit in which they worked, and their educational level were identified as key influencing factors. The results indicate a need to enhance pediatric nurses' knowledge and awareness of atraumatic care. Accordingly, it is recommended that nursing education programs be structured with a focus on atraumatic care and supported through in-service training. The findings from this study are expected to contribute to the expansion of child-friendly healthcare services and the improvement of nursing practices.
