Stress factors on pilots and relationship between business performance

According to the developments in the aviation sector and due to widespread preference of the air transport by passengers, the human factor has gained a critical role point in terms of minimizing accidents in the sector and ensuring safety. This study aims to measure the stress levels of the pilots and to determine the risk factors affecting their performance. In this context, Organizational Stress Questionnaire-Doetinchem, Vos-D questionnaire was used to investigate the demographic characteristics of the pilots such as gender, age, flight experience and their environmental factors. Pilots stress levels were evaluated in terms of 13 different stress factors, such as, excessive workload, task uncertainty, responsibility, conflict of duties, inability to leave the workplace, lack of belief in the necessity of the job, uncertainty in the future, uncertainty in the job, lack of job satisfaction, psychological complaints, drug use, lack of support from the chef and colleagues. The research was conducted with the participation of 101 pilots in a national airline company in Istanbul. Descriptive statistics and frequencies (demographic data), explanatory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. According to the statistical analysis, it was found that there were significant correlations between the eight different stress factor hypotheses and the performance of the pilots. Factors affecting the work performance of pilots; excessive workload, task uncertainty, task conflict, lack of support from the chef and colleague, lack of job satisfaction, concerns about work and psychological complaints.
