Irony in the postmodern Turkish novel

Turkish novel that gave its first sample after the period of Tanzimat got the current state by passing some phases. Genre of novel in Turkish literature extended its discourse wealth by day and samples of original novel emerged in virtue of new styles. One of the discourse styles of novel is 'irony'. History of irony extends over Socrates in Ancient Greece. Irony that is based on the contrast of implied meaning and spoken word in the simplest statement constitute one of the basic features of postmodern Turkish novel. Irony history of which is ancient as the history of humanity occurred in West as a concept and found here an intensive discussion area. In addition to this there are steady sources about irony both in Turkish and East literatures. Irony is counted as one of the basic features of postmodern art aesthetics at the same time. That is why postmodern Turkish novelists who compound irony critics in West with ironic discourse in East literature bring a new context to irony. Irony gains a totalitarian feature in its new context and shows an expansionist character that can contact with all factors of novel. At the same time irony is relevant with other humor types especially with parody. That is why ironical discourses in novels occur in different ways. Accordingly it is possible to see the samples of varied irony genres such as dramatic irony – as basic- romantic irony, verbal irony, irony of controversy and irony of fate in postmodern Turkish novels. In this study, subject of irony will be searched in novels that have the features of postmodern discourse in Turkish literature and depending upon the findings it will be detected way of ironic discourse in the novel. Basic aim of the whole study is revealing how irony reflects on the postmodern Turkish novel.
