The analysis of Sabahattin Ali stories in terms of children's literature principles and Turkish education

Using literary texts in which language is used aesthetically and effectively is of great importance for the Turkish education to achieve its goals. The stories of Sabahattin Ali, who is an important author of our literature will make it easier to reach these goals. In this study, the stories of Sabahattin Ali were examined in terms of the principles of children's literature and the possible contributions of these stories to Turkish education were emphasized. Seventeen stories based on expert opinions from the sixty stories included in the author's published five books (Watermill, Oxcart, Voice, Yeni Dünya, Glass House) have been evaluated according to the structure criteria of children's literature (theme, character and hero, language and expression, message, environment). These fourteen stories have been simplified / arranged according to the length that can be included in the Turkish textbook. It is not necessary any arrangement in these three stories. These stories are presented with activities which can achieve grammar objectives and four basic language skills with a thematic approach. A summary of forty-three stories that are not functional in terms of children's literature and Turkish education is mentioned at the end of the study. In this research in qualitative model, document analysis method was used. The data were analyzed with the qualitative content analysis technique. Since the messages of the stories are close to the level of children in the formal operations period, they have been appropriate for 7th and 8th grade students. Activities and preparatory work have also been prepared according to these grade levels. The study is expected to contribute to material development studies in Turkish education.
