Evaluation of healthcare workers' knowledge and practices on sustainable nutrition: Ankara Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Oncology Training and Research Hospital example

This is a cross-sectional study conducted between January 2022 and May 2022 to evaluate the knowledge levels and practices of healthcare workers on sustainable nutrition. The study was conducted on healthcare workers at Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Oncology Training and Research Hospital in Ankara. "Stretched Sampling Method" was used. Participants' socio-demographic characteristics, sustainable nutrition knowledge levels, and SCOFI were questioned in the form of an online questionnaire. The data collected by the research were analyzed with SPSS 26.0 program. A total of 298 people participated in the study; 79.2% were females, 52.0% were nurses, 20.5% were doctors, 60.4% had a bachelor's degree, % and 12.8 had a master's degree. The mean age was 36.13 ± 10.81 years. Sustainable nutrition knowledge and SCOFI mean scores were 10.71±5.3 (0-24) and 54.09±13.2 (0-100), respectively. No significant relationship was found between gender and sustainable nutrition knowledge mean scores and SCOFI scores (p>0.05). The sustainable lifestyle and food consumption and food waste subscale scores of the 18-25 age group and those working in the operating room and intensive care unit were lower than the other groups. As the level of education increases, the mean sustainable nutrition knowledge scores increase. The occupational group with the highest mean sustainable nutrition knowledge scores and sustainable lifestyle subscale scores were dietitians. A positive, moderate, and significant relationship was found between the sustainable nutrition knowledge score of individuals and SCOFI (p<0.05). Hospitals are important institutions for promoting sustainable nutrition. Healthcare workers can set an example in sustainable nutrition and practices of the society and lead the development of relevant policies. For this purpose, trainings should be provided for healthcare workers and the level of knowledge and awareness of healthcare workers should be increased
