Abstract (EN)

The study of oral health-related quality of life pertains to the assessment of the impact of oral health on overall health and the assessment of individuals' attitudes towards their oral health. It encompasses both positive and negative effects. Currently, there exist numerous questionnaire systems that assess the influence of intraoral issues on an individuals' health and overall quality of life. Oral health-related quality of life scales have been devised as a results of the inadequacy of objective clinical measures in fully capturing the impact of the disease on the quality of life. The OHIP 14 scales have been established as the most prevalent and dependable scales utilized in research pertaining to quality of life. The survey, comprising of 14 questions, assesses the degree to which patients en counter the associated problem. The evaluation of the survey outcomes is established through implementation of the 4-point Likert methodology, whereby a higher score is indicative of a lower quality of life. Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease characterized by the loss of alveolar bone and attachment in the tissues supporting the tooth, due to inflammation. In cases where more than 30 percent of the teeth are affected, it is classified as generalized chronic periodontitis. The act of smoking has been identified as a significant contributor to the development and advancement of periodontal diseases. The establisment of criteria, such as the presence of absence of smoking in clinical studies, poses challenges in terms of result interpretation. To mitigate such problems, assessing the classification of smokers may provide researches with additional insights for interpreting the outcomes. The Fagerstrom test is a tool utilized to asses smoking habits, consisting of six questions. It also generates a more comprehensive evaluation of demographic data by categorizing smokers in to five different categories. The non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease involves the implementation of a thorough Daily plaque control regimen and the management of the relationship between the periodontal and systemic conditions. Local predisposing factors such as supra and subgingival biofilm and calculus are removed, and carious lesions are treated as necessary. Patients with generalized chronic periodontitis who were smokers participated in the study. The Fagerstrom test was used to identify the type of smoking addiction, and non-surgical periodontal treatment was administered to all groups. The OHIP 14 TR questionnaire was presented to patients before and after the treatment in order to examine how the treatment affected their quality of life. 96 individuals who smoke and were diagnosed with periodontitis participated in our study. Following non-surgical periodontal therapy, the stage IV group showed the most pronounced changes in quality of life, whereas the stage I group, where the disease advanced more slowly, showed the least changes. The very minimally addicted group experienced a higher quality of life score change following non-surgical periodontal treatment, while the very addicted groups experienced a significantly less quality of life score improvement. This is according to the results of the Fagerstrom test. This is explained by the fact that smoking lessens the intensity of periodontal symptoms that are physically felt. Key Words: Quality of Life, OHIP 14 TR, Generalized Chronic Periodontitis, Fagerstrom Test
