The relationship between smoking and adaptation to pregnancy and body image

Abstract (EN)

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between smoking, adaptation to pregnancy and body image in pregnant women. Material and Methods: This analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted with 102 pregnant women (pregnant women who have never smoked in their life: 33 who quit smoking during their pregnancy: 35, who smoked during their pregnancy: 34) at the Trabzon Kanuni Training and Research Hospital pregnant outpatient clinics between April 2020 and June 2022. Research data were collected with Personal Information Form, Prenatal Self-Assessment Scale (PSEQ) and Body Perception Questionnaire (BPQ). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson Correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results: In the study, Prenatal Self-Assessment Scale mean scores were found to be higher in pregnant women who quit smoking during pregnancy and smoked during pregnancy compared to pregnant women who never smoked, and this difference was statistically significant in the one-way analysis of variance (p<0.05). In the study, smoking pregnant women (47.1%) in the Body Perception Questionnaire; body perceptions were found to be statistically significantly lower than pregnant women (39.4%) who had never smoked in their life and those who quit smoking during pregnancy (40.0%) (p=0.036). In addition, in the study, it was determined that the mean scores of the Body Perception Questionnaire were higher in pregnant women who quit smoking during pregnancy and smoked during pregnancy compared to pregnant women who never smoked, and this difference was statistically significant in the one-way analysis of variance (p<0.05). In the relationship between Prenatal Self-Assessment Scale and Body Perception Questionnaire mean scores of pregnant women who have never smoked in their life, those who quit smoking during pregnancy, and those who continue to smoke during pregnancy, a moderate and negative correlation was found between the level of adjustment to pregnancy and body image. Conclusion: In this study; It was observed that pregnant women who have never smoked in their life have higher compliance with pregnancy than pregnant women who quit smoking during pregnancy and smoked during pregnancy. It was observed that the body perception levels of pregnant women who smoked during pregnancy were lower than those who never smoked in their life and those who quit smoking during pregnancy. A moderate negative correlation was found between the levels of adjustment to pregnancy and body image of pregnant women who have never smoked in their life, those who quit smoking during pregnancy, and those who continued to smoke during pregnancy.
